DEAD SHARK FOUND ON THE SHORE AT POLIS

 Filenews 20 April 2021

A dead young shark was spotted on a shore in the Chrysochous Town area of Paphos on Sunday, April 18.

According to the Marine and Environmental Research (MER) Lab, this is the species Carcharhinus plumbeus (CCP)- Ashtray shark, which is found in both Cyprus and Greece but is not protected.

This particular shark species is threatened with extinction as numbers have declined in the Mediterranean region.

"A new shark has been spotted off the coast of Cyprus as part of the 'Sharks and Skates in Greece and Cyprus/ Sharks and Rays in Gr and Cy' citizen science programme," the Research Centre says, stressing that "sharks are not dangerous to humans. On the contrary, we need them for a healthy ecosystem."

The incident was posted on social media, raising public awareness and mobilising the Fisheries Department.
