 Filenews 29 April 2021

A new meta-analysis of research published in Diabetologia links patients suffering from diabetes mellitus and are at an advanced stage to the increased risk of death from the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 infection. The researchers studied 22 surveys involving 17,687 patients. This is the first ongoing review and meta-analysis involving observational studies investigating phenotypes in people suffering from diabetes mellitus who have been seriously ill or died due to coronavirus. While the research is ongoing, the data will be updated by scientists.

According to the data that emerges, men with diabetes mellitus had a 28% greater chance of dying from coronavirus compared to women with diabetes mellitus. In addition, patients over 65 years of age who had diabetes mellitus had up to three times the risk of death compared to younger people with diabetes mellitus. With each increase in age by 5 years, the risk of death due to crown complications for patients with diabetes mellitus increased by 43%.
