By the end of 2022 the world will have returned to normal, estimates billionaire Bill Gates, who has spent huge sums to tackle the pandemic.
In an interview with Sky News, he says he is optimistic about the fight against the pandemic, as additional vaccines will be available. While he does not expect COVID-19 to be eliminated until next year, Bill Gates expects the number of cases to be reduced to "very small numbers" by the end of 2022.
Top priority
The 65-year-old billionaire also insists that preparing for future pandemics is a "top priority" and is concerned that the current situation will be forgotten, as happened after the Ebola epidemic.
However, due to the devastating global economic and human costs of the pandemic, he believes at least "that this generation will remember it".
Asked whether the world will "fully return to normal" by the end of 2022, Bill Gates appears optimistic.
"Yes, I am (convinced). There are still a few questions about the widespread use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. If this is accepted, it would be very beneficial, and some of the rich countries, including the US and uk, even this summer will reach high levels of vaccination," he says.
It notes that by placing vaccines around the world by the end of 2021 and by 2022, "we will not have eliminated coronaion, but we will be able to reduce (cases) in very small numbers by the end of 2022".
Bill Gates also sees vaccination of the elderly as a priority for rich countries, as the pandemic was worse there than developing and points to the need to prepare humanity for future health crises.
"It is clear that, by understanding the variations and how quickly we can regulate the procedures, when a similar crisis occurs again, we will be able to be much smarter (towards it). People had not invested enough in this risk, so I hope we keep in mind that we need to invest and be ready for the next pandemic."
