MURDER IN ATHIENOU - 8 DAY DETENTION FOR 3 SUSPECTS

 Filenews 24 March 2021

The eight-day detention of the three suspects in the murder of a woman whose body was found at noon on Tuesday was ordered by the Nicosia District Court. The three suspects so far have pleaded not guilty to charges of premeditated murder and accessory to committing a felony.

The 32-year-old arrested first reportedly had an affair with the victim. Initially the three allegedly placed the woman's body in a sewer near the lights of "Good evening" in Nicosia and then, for reasons investigated by the Police, transported her and buried her in a field in Athienou.

In a statement to associated news, Police Spokesman Christos Andreou said that based on the evidence the Force has collected so far, the crime may have been committed about five months ago.

In relation to the woman's ancestry, Mr. Andreou mentioned only that she was Caucasian.

The crime came to light at noon on Tuesday, when a farmer found the body by chance in the area "Geratzia", which is located in the dead zone, between Pyrou and Athienou. At one point, at a point on the south bank of the village, he noticed a bag and clothes, in which it appeared that there was a body in a state of mummification.

The farmer alerted an acquaintance of a police officer, who, when inspecting the find, immediately called for reinforcements. Shortly after noon and using some information about a reported missing person in Nicosia province, i.e. a woman from a European country, the Police arrested a 32-year-old Egyptian living and working in Cyprus (not in the region of Athens) on suspicion of involvement in the case.

The scene as well as the victim's body were inspected by forensic expert Angeliki Papetta, who reportedly gravitates towards the conclusion that the victim was murdered elsewhere and then transferred to the spot where she was found.

It is worth stressing that the crime could remain unsolved if the farmer had not spotted the bag.  The farmer spotted this the night before, but did not realise immediately what it was.

The location "Geratzia" is located deep in the dead zone, near the Turkish outposts in the occupied area and only some farmers who maintain estates there frequent the area. That's why the police believe that those who buried the unfortunate woman there knew that locating her body would not be an easy task.
