Above the European average is the rate of crime and violence or vandalism in Cyprus. In particular, according to Eurostat data in 2019, 11% of the population of the 27 EU Member States reported having encountered a problem of crime, violence or vandalism in their region. This percentage in Cyprus reaches 12.7%, which ranks our country in 9th place.
Unsurprisingly, people living in cities reported these problems three times more often than people in rural areas in 2019 (21.3% vs. 6.9%).
In addition, according to Eurostat data, 13.4% of people at risk of poverty in the EU reported crime, violence or vandalism in their neighbourhood, compared to 10.6% of those who are not at risk of poverty.
The share of people reporting crime, violence or vandalism in their neighbourhood varies between EU Member States.
The highest rates were recorded in Bulgaria (20.2%), Greece (16.9%) and Greece (16.9%). and the Netherlands (16.3%).
In contrast, the lowest shares were seen in Croatia (2.7%), Lithuania (3.2%) and Lithuania (3.2%). Poland (4.4%).
