According to the design of the National Vaccination Plan for COVID-19 and the hierarchy of population groups, priority has been given from the outset to vaccination of elderly people, bearing in mind that this is a sensitive group of citizens with an increased risk of serious disease and hospitalization. According to data up to 14 February published by the European Centre for Control and Prevention (ECDC), Cyprus has very much achieved its first target for vaccination coverage of the elderly, ranking 2nd among European states in vaccination of people aged 80 and over.
As part of the Vaccination Plan, up to and including Saturday, 20 February, a total of 58,490 vaccinations were carried out, of which 19,221 were for people who completed their vaccination with both doses of the vaccine. At the same time, the Ministry of Health continues the vaccination coverage of health professionals, vulnerable groups and the elderly, with the aim of administering the 1st dose to the age group of 70 years and older within the next two weeks.
New appointments for people 71 years of age and older
To achieve the planning, the Ministry of Health announces that from tomorrow, February 23rd, at 9 a.m., 16,904 vaccination appointments will be made available for people aged 71 and over for all Vaccination Centres in Cyprus. It is noted that from Thursday, February 25th, an additional Vaccination Centre is in operation at the Old Electric in Paphos, where up to seven workshops will operate simultaneously. Also, from Friday, February 26th, there will be a Vaccination Centre at PASYDY House in Larnaca, where up to seven workshops will also be able to operate at the same time.
In order to avoid discomfort and confusion in the Vaccination Centres, and because it has been observed that in some cases citizens come much earlier than their scheduled appointment, a strong appeal is made such as people who will be vaccinated to go to the Vaccination Centres at the time of their appointment and not earlier.
At the same time, it is recommended that citizens who fall into the age sub-group that has priority for vaccination, arrange appointments on the first time available day and time, so that there is a continuous flow to the Vaccination Centres.
It is recalled that depending on the rate of exhaustion of appointments for people over the age of 71, citizens will be informed by means of a communication on the availability of appointments to subsequent age groups. Citizens are invited to follow the announcements of the Ministry of Health, so that they know the differences in the age group and make an appointment arrangement.
