Filenews 12 February 2021
The Police are again advising citizens to take the necessary precautions to prevent their car from being stolen or property being stolen from their car.
Car owners/drivers, who are also responsible for their vehicles, should ensure their safe storage, as well as their keys, in order to prevent access to them and possible theft.
Useful Tips to the public:
Do not leave car keys exposed to prominent places or places that anyone can access.
Ensure the safe storage of the car keys, especially when located in crowded areas (shops, restaurants, beaches, etc.) where there is a possibility that they will become the subject of theft.
Do not leave the car engine running even if you will be away even for a very short period of time and never leave the keys in the ignition or door.
Always lock the doors and fully raise the windows, even if the car is parked in front of your house or somewhere else you consider safe.
Always park your car in places where there is enough road lighting. Dark or outlying spots make the work of thieves easier.
Make sure you remove the car keys from the ignition.
If possible, place an alarm system in the car.
Where there's a garage, use it.
Car thefts
If necessary to leave items in the vehicle, they should be placed under the seats or in the luggage compartment.
Bags, briefcases, mobile phones, portable computers or any other items in visible places inside the car, even if it is locked, should never be left.
Always lock the doors and raise the windows, even if the car is parked in front of your house.
Always park the car in well-lit places. Dark or outlying spots make the work of thieves easier.
Never leave the keys in the ignition or the door, even if you will only be gone for 2 minutes.
Place an alarm in your car if possible.
Use your garage as much as possible.
In general, the public is encouraged to be vigilant and to cooperate closely with the Police. If you become aware of any suspicious traffic, please inform the nearest Police Station or contact the Citizen's Contact Line on 1460.
