TECHNOLOGY TO TREAT SHIP WASTE - CYPRIOT COMPANY APPLIES FOR PATENT

Filenews 15 February 2021 - by Angelos Nikolaou

A Cypriot company has applied for a patent for the use of technology on offshore platforms for the treatment of ship waste (food waste and any fuel waste), without having to be delivered to the various ports and without having to spend a lot of money as an entry fee to collectors on land. Ships along the way will unload their waste on the sea platform and convert it into diesel. According to The CEO of Alphakat Holdings International Ltd, Mario Ionidis, the relevant patent approval confirmation will be officially published on 3/3/2021.

Diesel will be stored in floating tanks and sold at a lower price to ships on the route without having to enter ports for refuelling. This will save time and of course money. The entire programme will serve as a waste treatment facility for diesel production and storage and supply of fuel to passing ships delivering their waste and receiving diesel. The overall objective at some stage will be to install Alphakat technology at the oil drilling platform facilities where crude oil is exported and to convert quantities of crude oil into diesel.

The above company is currently ready to contribute to the target for RES in transport with the production of biofuels from organic waste and has secured all relevant permits. It secured the raw material (woody biomass) with the signature of an intention to cooperate with the board of exploitation of sites for the disposal of household waste in Larnaca and Famagusta, which will be free of charge, as well as the disposal of up to 4,000 tons of biodiesel, to Cypriot and foreign companies that have diesel on the Cypriot market. The company expects the support of the project from the state, as it proclaims with the projects promoted in the framework of harmonisation with Cyprus' commitments to the EU.

It is noted that Cyprus had an obligation until 2020 to use renewable energy sources in transport by 10%, which was not implemented. For 2030 the transport target was set at 14%. Therefore, the possibility of the Commission imposing heavy fines is an open reason for Cyprus' inability to achieve the objectives that seem unattainable.

Alphakat Holdings is looking for interested investors to install four KDV 600 plants next to the waste treatment plant in Kosi. The business plan is ready and environmental and urban planning permits have been granted. The authorisation granted will eventually be intended for the treatment of 40,000 tonnes of woody biomass (tree pruning and waste vegetation which is 100% biomass-based import material) and will yield after processing at least 17,000 tonnes of EN590 quality biodiesel to be mixed into a minimum of 10% addition to conventional diesel, in accordance with the European Directive on the use of renewable fuels in the transport diesel market.
