SHIP FROM OCCUPIED AREAS ANCHORED IN PAPHOS - AUTHORITIES INTERVENE

Filenews 3 February 2021 - by Dora Christodoulou

The Port Police in Paphos, as well as the competent services of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, were mobilised from noon when a Panamanian-flagged ship, which requested permission to dock off the coast of the port of Kato Paphos due to a sea disturbance, was found to have violated international conventions by having as a stopover not controlled by the Republic a port in the occupied areas.

It is a merchant ship carrying fertilizer and other agricultural products, according to competent sources, and which had sailed from a port in Turkey bound for Rostov, Russia. The ship initially docked in Larnaca and continued its journey, when due to sea disturbance it again requested permission from the authorities of the Republic to anchor off Kato Paphos.

When this was done, the authorities of the Republic who inspected the ship under the laws and regulations found that it had docked after its departure from Turkey and in occupied Bogazi. The competent governmental authorities, which have made such steps towards both the shipowner and international organisations, have therefore been informed.

At the end of these procedures, it is expected that the merchant ship will be authorised to sail towards its final destination.
