PROVISIONAL - IN A SIMPLE AND ESSENTIAL WAY, THE EVENTS FOR THE 200 YEARS OF THE NATIONAL REVOLUTION OF 1821 [depending on measures in place]

 Filenews 4 February 2021

The Programme of Events for the 200th years of the National Revolution of 1821 was presented today by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sport and Youth, stressing that the emphasis is placed both on the Cypriot dimension of ethnicity, as well as on spiritual content and ideological prerequisites, i.e. the Modern Greek Enlightenment.

The Advisory Committee on the organisation of the anniversary events has completed its work, with Commission President Georgios Babinotis pointing out that the essence of The National Paliggenesis and its continuity, combined with the absolute need to tackle the pandemic, will be honoured in a 'simple, essential, revealing, dynamic, national and Christian 'glorious' way'.

The logo of the events was chosen the emblematic flag of the Cypriot Fighters who participated in a distinct convoy in the revolutionary operations, the Greek flag of Cypriot freedom, which is kept in the War Museum in Athens. The logo adopted by the Commission for the celebrations of the 200th anniversary of Cyprus is even used.

A number of events were preliminarily approved at yesterday's Cabinet meeting. This programming will, of course, then be adapted accordingly to the wider health conditions and what will apply as measures to tackle the pandemic.

In addition to the events planned directly by the Commission itself, a number of events organised by the EPAN have been included in the programme of celebrations, as well as events organised by various social and cultural bodies, which will be placed under the auspices of the Commission.

According to the Prodromos, the list that has been put yesterday before the Council of Ministers is not definitive, i.e. it has not been closed definitively, but other events may be included accordingly. There is also a Commission decision, if this is offered, to extend the events even next year, 2022.

The big event of March 25

The focus of the celebrations will certainly be the 25th of March itself. At the main event in addition to the greeting of the President of the Republic and the Ambassador of Greece in Cyprus, the main speaker will be the well-known Professor of Cypriot origin and member of the Academy of Athens Paschalis Estromilidis. The event also includes a musical program created specifically for the event by Eleni Muzala and Marinos Poulos, with texts by the poet Kyriakos Charalambidis and in collaboration with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Foundation. A special documentary, created by the director Michalis Georgiadis in collaboration with professors P. Papapolyviou and G. Georgis, will be presented as part of the event.

Due to the health conditions that appear to be in force during this period, the event is planned to take place on the day of the anniversary online and by television broadcast and to be repeated with a physical presence and an audience on July 8th.

During this period of March, a number of other similar events are planned, such as special concerts by the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, the awarding of the prizes of the student competitions for the 200th anniversary, the publication of a special commemorative series of stamps, etc. All events will be rescheduled on the basis of the relevant health conditions.

A second celebration pole is planned in July, on the occasion of the anniversary of the martyrdom of the Ethnomartyr Archbishop Kyprianou. The Cypriot dimension of the national revolution with the "Juliana" will of course also be stressed. The main events will take place in collaboration with the Municipality of Strovolos, due to the origin of the ethnomartyr Archbishop and on the occasion will of course be honoured and the work of our great national poet, Vasilis Michaelides, will be highlighted. Events in July include the opening of the Museum of the Ethnomartyr Archbishop Kyprianou, concerts, conferences and more, as well as an event focused on the Crypt located under the Cyprus High School, on the theme of the Friendly Society in Cyprus.

To celebrate the 200th anniversary, EPAN will also work with a number of cultural institutions, Local Authorities, Universities and individuals. Conferences, concerts, publications, etc. are under the auspices of the Commission and are included in the events.
