ARCHBISHOP'S BULLDOZERS DEMOLISHED PRESERVED BUILDINGS

Filenews 1 February 2021 - by Vasos Vassiliou

Crime in the area around the Archdiocese with instructions from the Archbishop. Preserved buildings were demolished, which provoked the reaction of Nicosia Municipality officials who, when informed, rushed to the scene to rescue what was left.

The Archbishop's action is considered illegal not only because the buildings were preserved but also because in the permit issued in the context of the construction of the cathedral, their preservation and maintenance was made a condition.

As he told the "F" officer of the Municipality there is no way to declassify the listed buildings. However, according to the legislation, anyone who demolishes illegal buildings can be forced to rebuild them.

The action of the demolition is considered deliberate and that it was done in a flash in order to prevent the reaction of those responsible and this is reinforced by the fact that the demolition took place without even informing the Electricity Authority in order to cut off the electricity supply, which is also considered dangerous.

The president of the ETEK went to the scene and saw the demolished buildings angry, expressing his indignation. It is inconceivable that he told "F" that parts of civilization would be demolished before our eyes.

We call on the Municipality, Mr. Konstantis said, to stop the demolitions and to bring those responsible to justice for criminal offences.

If the buildings were dangerous, the Archbishop should have made sure the danger was restored, not demolished them, he said. It is not understood that the Church itself is in the body of civilization, he concluded.
