ACCORDING TO THE GERMAN PRESS, GREECE IS A ROLE MODEL AS REGARDS VACCINATIONS

 Filenews 23 February 2021

In the countries that are role models in the vaccination of the population, it includes Greece, the German press, even stating that the "National Operational Plan Freedom, works like clockwork".

Anyone looking for role models finds them in Greece, France, Denmark and Israel," Handelsblatt writes in particular, in a report entitled "Where vaccinations work best".

The newspaper, among other things, writes characteristically, that in Greece "most citizens do not have to do anything, since they are notified by SMS or mail. The contact details come from the intangible prescribing system'.

In Greece the Freedom project acts as a clock

The German newspaper, according to DW, reports that there is "chaos" in Germany in closing vaccination appointments.

"Servers are collapsing, telephone lines of communication are overloaded. In some other countries the vaccination process has long been better and more organized," he says, and in response from Athens he notes: "By the weekend a total of 700,000 people had been vaccinated in Greece, corresponding to a rate of 6.5% first-time vaccinations. 230,000 people have already received the second dose. The goal by the summer is to have vaccinated 80% of the over-18s. In contrast, 3.3 million citizens and some 1.7 million people have received the first tranche. and the second. The vaccination rate is at 4%.

The National Operational Vaccination Plan "Freedom" operates a clock", continues the financial newspaper and observes: "Most citizens do not have to do anything, since they are notified by SMS or mail. The contact details come from the intangible prescribing system. At the same time, citizens are given the opportunity to make an appointment online. A telephone line of communication, like the one that in Germany leads to despair for many citizens, does not exist in Greece, because as government circles say it is not in line with the digitised process."

For the vaccination certificate

The German media also make particular reference to the vaccination certificate they promote, Athens and Nicosia.

"Greece and Cyprus are seeking as soon as possible to restart their tourism by allowing mainly vaccinated tourists to enter the country. Bilateral agreements have already been launched with Israel and other countries," the DW website tagesschau.de in response from Athens.

ARD's news website observes: "For a country living off tourism, the transport of the virus or a mutant strain by tourists is of great concern. The solution could be a vaccination certificate. Earlier this month Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis agreed with his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu to create a two-way "travel corridor" between Greece and Israel. But that is where the difficulty lies. While more than 3 million people have been vaccinated in Israel, i.e. a third of the population, in Greece 7% and the second 3% of the population have made the first dose of the vaccine.

However, Nicosia, which has similar vaccination rates to Greece, also came to an agreement with Israel. Cyprus and Greece are therefore among the countries that have created fait accompli, while the EU is still discussing a vaccination certificate. In the meantime, Greece is planning agreements with other third countries. According to the Ministry of Tourism the goal is a "deal with Britain or even the USA".

On the refugee issue and Erdogan's pushback accusations

"President Tayyip Erdogan has long used migrants as a pawn in the conflict with the EU. The accusations against Greece for illegal re-promotions stand still, but Ankara does not treat refugees any less violently," he writes, according to the same source on Spiegel Online entitled "Erdogan accuses Greece of pushback."

The German website notes: "At a conference on migration at a university in Izmir, the Turkish president stressed that in 2020 alone Greece has made almost 9,000 illegal re-launches of refugees and migrants. Since May 2020, Spiegel records how the Greek coastguard stops refugee boats in the Aegean Sea, destroys their engines and abandons refugees at sea. Migrants are often rescued hours later by the Turkish coastguard. Among the people who are abandoned to their fate in the open are children. At least seven re-launches involved, or were close to, Frontex units, Der Spiegel magazine's research shows.

But Erdogan is also not innocent of his attitude towards refugees. He built a wall on the border with Syria making it almost impossible for refugees to escape the war. Humanitarian organisations criticise Ankara's deportation of Syrian refugees from Turkey to war zones in Syria. At the same time information from refugee camps in Turkey is talking about very poor feeding and care of refugees."
