WHO - COLLECTIVE IMMUNITY WILL NOT BE ACHIEVED THIS YEAR

 Filenews 11 January 2021

Although the distribution and administration of vaccines for Covid-19 has begun in many countries, collective immunity will not be achieved this year, the World Health Organisation warns.

"We will not succeed (...) collective immunity in 2021," said WHO scientific adviser Sumia Souaminathan, stressing the importance of continuing to respect protection measures, such as hand washing, masking and distances, to bring the pandemic under control.

Steaminathan hailed the "incredible progress" made by scientists, who have been able to develop many safe and effective vaccines in less than a year.

"But it will take some time to distribute them," he noted. "It takes time to produce the doses on a large scale, we are not talking about millions but billions," he added, asking everyone "to be patient." Vaccines will eventually reach all countries, he assured. "But while we wait, we must not forget that there are measures that work," he recalled.

According to Souaminathan, health and social measures will need to be respected to stop the spread of the new coronavirus "at least until the end of this year".
