WHAT TARIFFS APPLY TO UK ONLINE PURCHASES?

 Filenews 13 January 2021

Following consumer reports of tariffs on orders and purchases online from the UK, the Commission, in response to a question, made it clear today that tariffs did not exist, do not exist and will not exist on such orders of products from the UK.

In particular, according to the Commission and the relevant representatives Miriam Garcia Ferrer, Daniel Sheridan Ferri and chief representative Eric Mamer, despite Brexit, due to the EU-UK trade agreement and the interim provisions, tariffs do not exist.

However, consumers may be asked to pay VAT. In addition, zero duties apply to products from the UK, not to third-country products arriving in the EU via the UK - these attract the duties that have always been in place at the time of first customs clearance in the EU.

The Representatives of the Commission also make it clear that in some cases administrative charges, such as customs charges, may also apply, in which case orders from the UK will be more expensive.
