The first day of implementation of the vaccination phase of senior citizens has gone smoothly. 527 citizens over 80 years of age received the 1st dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
The response to the second phase of the vaccination programme was massive, with hundreds of citizens over the age of 80 who made an appointment having already been vaccinated at their first dose. The number of citizens vaccinated today stands at 527.
Today's vaccinations, which marked the start of the second phase, began at 8 a.m. and ended at 3 p.m. It was preceded by the registration of citizens at the Vaccination Portal on Tuesday, the day on which the service was made available to population groups.
As they left the Vaccination Centres, citizens expressed joy and relief at the beginning of the end of their great suffering. During the first day everything went smoothly and no unforeseen incidents were recorded. It is noted that those vaccinated remain on site for about 15 minutes as a precaution.
Vaccination was carried out through five Vaccination Centres and a total of eight workshops. Vaccination Centres operate at the Latsia Health Centre, Old Nicosia Hospital, Old Limassol Hospital, Old Larnaca Hospital and Paphos General Hospital.
From Monday, January 11th, vaccination centres will be operating in both Troodos Hospital and Famagusta General Hospital.
A total of around 33,000 citizens over the age of 80 are expected to be vaccinated, marking the start of the national effort to exit the health crisis.
Smiles of satisfaction during the first phase of the vaccination plan
Totally successful is the first phase of the vaccination plan for COVID-19, which is completed in the coming days. This phase includes residents and staff of nursing homes and institutions of chronic adult diseases.
Vaccination continued today at six nursing homes, three of which are in mountainous areas of Troodos (Pelendri, Kyperounta and Foini).
Vaccination is provided through mobile units properly staffed by Health Visitors, Nurse and Physician.
In today's statements citizens who were vaccinated expressed their joy that for them the pandemic is at the beginning of its end: "I feel very good that I put the vaccine in, I am pleased," said Ms. Galatea, who is 100 years old. Smiles of optimism from other seniors, who said they were familiar with the administration of vaccines.
The national effort to annihilate the virus from our country continues. The vaccination plan comes to a priority relief for thousands of elderly people whose lives are under constant threat. It is noted that epidemiological indicators have been deteriorating in recent times due to the increased mobility of the festive season.
The process of receiving about 6,800 doses of Pfizer vaccines per week is expected to continue in the coming weeks, while Moderna vaccines are expected to be added to the Ministry's equipment from next week.
Completion of vaccination of persons over 80 years of age is followed by vaccination of persons over 75 years of age.
