As part of the continuous upgrading of its technological equipment, the Cyprus Police is proceeding to completely replace its existing wireless network with a new state-of-the-art digital radio communication system, based on the European Protocol "TETRA". The "TETRA" system is a Digital Radio Communication System, which is widely used by law enforcement authorities offering high availability of communication channels and especially security in communications, and is expected to enhance police operational capabilities.
In addition, communication through the TETRA network allows emergency services, such as the Ambulance Service, the Fire Department and the Department of Forests, to communicate with each other as a combined team. Cooperation between services through this system means that users will be able to react more effectively and be fully informed when and where necessary, such as in a serious accident or a major rescue operation. So far, the Police have procured and installed a number of cells at selected strategic points in Cyprus and two central servers that will form the network, along with 3,300 wireless hand, office and vehicle terminals. The system has been in pilot operation since 23 December and is expected to be fully implemented by the summer.
