Although it continues to record losses from illegal connections of premises to the city's water system or from thefts of water from illegal interference with water meters, the situation in the municipal area of Paphos has improved considerably in the last year following the actions of those responsible.
Exclusive information from "F" indicates that a wide range of illegal activities by entrepreneurs or ordinary citizens in this regard has been dealt with drastically, contributed to the rational management of the water balance in the Municipality, although the problems have not been completely eliminated.
Research carried out by the Municipality shows that for the most part the illegalities were carried out in intubating before they reached the water meters, an act that allowed the illegals to use water without being charged. Cases of people who interfered with the water meters themselves to record fewer quantities of water used were also recorded. A source said an entire apartment building with as much water consumption as a small house alone was found.
The revenue losses of the Municipality from these illegal practices amounted for years to very large amounts, according to the same source, who said characteristically that if the water consumed in these cases was normally costed, then an additional revenue of a few hundred thousand euros would enter the municipal funds.
However, officials of the Municipal Palace of Paphos stressed to "F" that the problem is now being tackled with determination and drastically, having already contributed to the improvement of the situation. They expressed the conviction that the continued actions of the municipal authority would contribute to the complete elimination of illegality in the near future.
