PAPHOS - AESTHETIC DEFICIT IN SEVERAL AREAS

Filenews 21 January 2021 - by Dora Christodoulou

The campaign to remove illegalities in the municipal area of Paphos brings to light another aspect beyond that which concerned illegalities and their treatment: this is the issue of aesthetics, which seems to be absent in the majority of districts and neighbourhoods of the city.

Unfortunately, to a large extent Paphos acts as a "showcase" for its outwardly beautiful image, it reported characteristically to the "F" responsible factor, with its aesthetic superiority limited to areas where the Municipality had intervened by setting strict conditions, such as the historical centre and the tourist area.

"From then on, in the neighbourhoods there's a party of promiscuity," he said.

The same source pointed out that as a result of the problems identified the Municipality of Paphos will immediately continue, with the retreat of the pandemic, the tour of the workshops in areas where a serious problem has been found. Entire districts of the city, the same source said, are full of arbitrary interventions by private individuals in their premises in a way that is both illegal, but also creates a third-world image, while interventions are observed in public and other open spaces.

At the same time, these sources stressed, the issues of cleanliness are much more serious than is believed.

The interventions that began in 2019 and now covered the entire municipal area will be repeated, they stressed, since in addition to the extent of the problem that still exists, it is also an obligation of the Municipality to the tourist compositions of the city as decided in cooperation with the Tourism Development and Promotion Company of Paphos Region and the Paphos District Administration. During these consultations, issues related to the built environment and visual pollution caused by the arbitrary placement of all kinds of billboards and arbitrary premises that exist mainly in districts, along the roads and in several communities of Paphos province were discussed.

The President of the EBRD, George May, informed the attendees at the time that all surveys and comments of the tourist partners comment negatively on the current situation and called for immediate action, in particular with regard to the removal of illegal constructions and parades and billboards, as well as the decorum of all areas of Paphos.
