The share of electricity from renewable sources in Cyprus is one of the lowest in the EU, Eurostat reported on Friday.
In 2019, it was 8 per cent in Malta and 10 per cent in Cyprus, Luxembourg and Hungary.
More than 70 per cent of electricity consumed in 2019 was generated from renewable sources in Austria (75 per cent) and Sweden (71 per cent).
The consumption of electricity from renewable sources was also high in Denmark (65 per cent), Portugal (54 per cent) and Latvia (53 per cent), accounting for more than half of electricity consumed in these countries.
In 2019, renewable energy sources made up 34 per cent of gross electricity consumption in the EU, slightly up from 32 per cent in 2018.
Wind and hydropower accounted for over two-thirds of the total electricity generated from renewable sources, 35 per cent each. The remaining electricity generated was from solar power (13 per cent), solid biofuels (8 per cent) and other renewable sources (9 per cent).
Solar power is the fastest-growing source: in 2008, it accounted for 1 per cent.
