EXPLANATIONS FROM PFIZER PROMPTED BY COMMISSION ON VACCINE DELAYS

 Filenews 22 January 2021

The European Commission will ask Pfizer for an explanation of the new delays in sending Covid-19 vaccines to European Union countries next week, a Commission spokesman announced.

Pfizer and the European Commission had announced that there would be no more delays next week, after shipments slowed this week.

Frustration in Brussels

However, the frustration in Brussels is evident as vaccination strategies across Europe go backwards.

In particular, in all States there have been delays in deliveries of Pfizer vaccine doses, with reduced deliveries of 30 to 40%.

In a sudden announcement the company had said the delays would last a week but it looks like it will take longer.

Brussels is stepping up pressure on pharmaceuticals to deliver on their promises.

Meanwhile, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control is warning states to take additional measures as multiple mutations of the virus are expected.

Yesterday's announcement of multiple mutations rattled European capitals.

That is why, at the summit, European leaders issued a stern warning to citizens to avoid non-essential travel and to increase border tests.

It is no longer out of the question to close borders with countries where there is an outbreak of new mutations of the virus.

Belgium announced it would consider closing the border for non-essential travel in February.
