CONSUMERS - NO DECREE HAS YET BEEN ISSUED REGARDING TOURIST CREDIT VOUCHERS

 Filenews 25 January 2021

The Cyprus Consumers' Association invites the Minister of Finance to immediately issue the relevant Decree in relation to the Law on the Taking of Extraordinary Measures in the Tourism Sector. According to an announcement by the Association, on 02 June 2020 the Law on the Taking of Extraordinary Measures in the Tourism Sector of 2020, Law 59(I)/2020, was published in the official newspaper of the Republic.

The provisions of the above law, it is stated, include state guarantees for credit notes, vouchers, due to the pandemic, totalling 86.6 million euros for cancellation of package trips 1,500,000 euros, for cancellation of direct bookings from hotels 5,000,000 euros, for cancellation of cruise and accommodation in hotels 80,000,000 euros and for cancellation of rental of vehicles 100,000 euros.

The law referred to, inter alia, was added, authorising the Minister of Finance to issue a relevant Decree laying down the conditions for the application of the above Provisions.

"Unfortunately, the Cyprus Consumers' Association finds that, although eight months have passed since the publication of the law, it appears that the Minister of Finance has not yet issued the relevant Decree, with the result that, until now at least, consumers who have credit notes in their hands are not guaranteed by state guarantees," it notes.

Having regard to all the above, the Cyprus Consumers' Association invites the Minister of Finance to issue the relevant Decree immediately, so that consumers feel that the credit notes they have in their hands are actually guaranteed by the State, in case of failure of those who issued them to fulfil their obligations.
