ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES OF KATO PAPHOS - CONTRACT OFFICIALLY SIGNED

Filenews 22 January 2021 - by Dora Christodoulou

The work of the unification of the Archaeological Sites of Kato Paphos is now entering a phase of completion. The Mayor of Paphos, Phaedon Phaedon, signed with the contractor Miltiadis Neophytou the contract for the completion of the project, spending about €2,000,000. Work will begin immediately and be completed within eight months.

In statements after the signing, Mayor Paphos pointed out that the procedures for the implementation of the project had been initiated by the Department of Public Works in 2015. Since then, he said, the Municipality of Paphos has carried out 32 projects, while this one is still being completed. He described the project as a "new gem" for the city and noted that its completion would contribute to the further development and visitation of the region, which is one of the most historic in the Mediterranean, included in Unesco's heritage list.

He added that the total project spans an area of 20 thousand square meters and includes, in addition to the aerial footbridge already installed, three squares, pedestrian streets, special routes and more.

For his part, the Company's Director Miltiadis Neophytou assured the Mayor of Paphos that the project would be carried out with due quality and delivered within the planned timetable.

It is recalled that the first Competition for the execution of the project was launched in December 2015 by the Department of Public Works and in February 2016 a contract was signed between the Department of Public Works and the successful bidder. Construction work began in October 2016, but was halted in May 2018 due to serious problems with the progress of work. In January 2019, the Department of Public Works undertook the completion of the project through subcontractors, but the work could not proceed productively and was interrupted again in February 2020.

Subsequently, the Municipality of Paphos, after consultation with the competent Minister, Giannis Karousos, claimed and took the assignment of the project to offer it and complete it.
