In 2019, households in Cyprus spent 11.4 per cent of total consumption expenditure on food and non-alcoholic beverages, roughly the same as Denmark and Finland, Eurostat reported on Monday.
People in the EU spent over €956 billion on food and non-alcoholic beverages last year.
This represents 13.0 per cent of total consumption expenditure and ranks as the third-largest category of household expenditure after housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, which accounted for 23.5 per cent of household expenditure, and transport (13.1 per cent).
Households in Romania topped the list, spending around a fourth of total household consumption expenditure on food and non-alcoholic beverages (26.0 per cent), followed by households in Lithuania (20.2 per cent) and Estonia (19.3 per cent).
In contrast, the share was less than 10 per cent in three EU member states, Ireland (8.6 per cent), Luxembourg (8.9 per cent) and Austria (9.7 per cent).
