"Significant unanimity is observed in most European countries, in relation to the measures adopted in the effort to prevent the further spread of COVID-19 disease," the Ministry of Health said in a statement, a day after the new restrictive measures, decided by the Government. It even gives relevant information on the decisions of the European countries which had preceded them and on what has been the case so far in the 31 countries of the European continent.
According to recent data presented by the European Centre for the Control and Prevention of Infectious Diseases (ECDC) for 31 countries on the European continent with regard to the current measures for pandemic management, the actions taken by governments focus on limiting social gatherings and, by extension, contacts that citizens have.
As shown in the table below, strict prohibitions are currently in place on mass gatherings and social events and gatherings. 11 of the 31 countries where there is no total ban on social gatherings apply restrictions on the maximum number of attendees.
In relation to the sectors, most countries have suspended dining areas, entertainment facilities and gyms, places which present an increased risk for the transmission of the virus due to confusion, mixing of groups of people, over-transmission phenomena and difficulty in properly complying with individual protection measures.
Given the concern expressed by the scientific community across Europe about a possible deterioration of the epidemiological picture over the Christmas holidays, the ECDC in a recent report points out that activities such as public and private social gatherings, and during the holidays there are risks of transmission of the virus and recommends limiting their size and duration. It favours the gradual and targeted lifting of measures, with the aim of avoiding a sharp increase in the numbers of cases, hospital admissions and in particular deaths, which will put a great deal of pressure on the Health Systems.
