A bomb targeted a Cyta telecommunications centre in Ayia Fyla, Limassol late on Sunday evening, while a Molotov cocktail was thrown at a Hellenic Bank branch in the same area and an attempt was made to set fire to the Christmas tree of the Limassol municipality.
According to police, the bomb which detonated 20 minutes before midnight damaged the glass entrance of the building.
CID chief Lefteris Kyriacou said police are looking at CCTV footage from the area.
Next to the entrance the words ‘No to 5G’ and ‘There is resistance against 5G’ were sprayed, he explained.
It is suspected the people responsible are the same who immediately afterwards threw Molotov cocktails and firecrackers at the Hellenic Bank branch nearby.
According to the head of the CID no damage was caused by one of the devices while another one failed to detonate.
A little later, perpetrators tried to burn the Christmas tree in Grigoris Afxentiou square outside the offices of the district administration with a Molotov cocktail.
A security guard equipped with a fire extinguisher managed to contain the damage before alerting police. He said the incident involved at least five people, all of whom had covered their faces.
The mayor and the municipal council on Monday condemned the vandalism and the destruction.
“The unsuccessful attempt of the hooded men to burn the Christmas tree of the municipality and cause damage to state and private property confirms that it was an organised criminal act,” the announcement said.
“We expect that the competent authorities will fulfil their duty, bringing the offenders to justice and preserve the citizens’ sense of security.”
