Cyprus is among the EU member states with a low share of healthcare expenditure, according to the latest Eurostat figures.
The most recent statistics on current healthcare expenditure, public and private, show the figures vary widely across EU countries.
On average in the EU, healthcare expenditure amounted to 9.9 per cent of GDP in 2018.
The largest shares were recorded in Germany (11.5 per cent of GDP) and France (11.3 per cent), followed by Sweden (10.9 per cent).
The figure for Cyprus is 6.77 per cent, roughly the same as in 2016 and 2017, and the same as Hungary, Slovakia and Estonia.
The lowest shares of healthcare expenditure were recorded in Luxembourg (5.3 per cent of GDP) and Romania (5.6 per cent).
Relative to population size, healthcare expenditure was highest in Denmark, €5,260 per inhabitant, Luxembourg (€5,220) and Sweden (€5,040) in 2018, while it was lowest in Romania (€580) and Bulgaria (€590).
With an expenditure of €1,645 per inhabitant, Cyprus is at the lower end of the rankings, far below the EU average of €2,982.
