FIVE SEARCH WARRANTS ISSUED IN CONNECTION WITH 'GOLDEN' PASSPORTS

Filenews 16 December 2020 - by Michalis Hatzivasilis

Five search warrants were executed yesterday by the Police in connection with the granting of "golden" passports and developments are expected soon. It is a law firm and a business in Larnaca, with the members of the Crime Detection Department seeking documents and receiving statements from five persons, in relation to one of the 12 cases investigated by the three-member Commission under Dimitra Kalogirou.

The police had gone to a judge the day before yesterday and secured the warrants, after first presenting the witness material before it. Early in the morning, the professional premises and homes of the five persons allegedly involved in a case of the Cypriot investment project in the city and province of Larnaca were investigated.

As "F" recently wrote, the Police had gone a long way in their investigations and identified evidence justifying the conduct of investigations into several cases concerning the Kalogirou finding. In this case, the Police are investigating a case involving an alleged conspiracy to commit a felony and misdemeanor, forgery and circulation of false documents, obtaining registration with false representations and money laundering.

This case concerns three Iranians with Dominican Republic citizenship who were also granted Cypriot citizenship. They are a father and son as well as another relative against whom the police have issued arrest warrants.

The father named Mehdi Ebragimi Eshratabadi appeared before the Cypriot authorities as Tony Newman and did not disclose that he is wanted for fraud in Iran. Both the father and son of Maleksabet Ebrahimi are wanted by Interpol, while the Cabinet has begun the process of revoking their nationalities.

Information from "F" from police sources indicates that once the investigations are complete the case will be brought before the Legal Service for instructions. At the same time, investigations are under way into other cases and already a case of naturalized documents in Paphos is at an advanced stage.
