Thirty people who tested positive for the coronavirus have died so far in December, 18 in the past week alone, the health ministry said on Saturday.
Deaths in November and so far in December account for 67 per cent of total deaths since the pandemic started in March.
The ministry said 98 eight people have died to date, with the cause of death in 75 cases being Covid.
The majority, 65 per cent, or 49, of those who died from Covid were men. Men made up the majority in the number of people who died with Covid with 66 per cent, or 65.
The 80 – 84 age group was hit the hardest so far with 28 per cent of the deaths. At the same time, one in five people who died with Covid belonged to the 75-79 age group.
The ministry said 35 people died in November and 30 so far in December.
Eighteen people with Covid died last week week alone, making it the deadliest week so far since March.
This week has so far seen 12 deaths of people with Covid, with the virus being the cause in 11. Twenty-six of the 30 deaths recorded in December concerned permanent residents of Nicosia and Limassol with 13 each.
