403 NEW CASES AND TWO DEATHS, THURSDAY, PLUS 236 Positive Rapid Tests to be confirmed by PCR

 Filenews 10 December 2020

The Ministry of Health announces that today, December 10, 2020:

- Two people have died of COVID-19 disease, bringing the total number of deaths to 72.

- 106 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, 20 of whom are in serious condition.

- A total of 14,567 disease detection tests have been carried out, of which 3,736 have been carried out using the molecular method (PCR) and 10,831 using the rapid test.

- 403 new cases of the disease were detected and confirmed by molecular tests (PCRs), bringing the total number of cases to 14,052. The 403 include 152 verifications from rapid tests of the previous days.

- In 236 cases from the rapid antigen detection tests there was a positive result, which should be verified by the molecular method (PCR).

Here are today's results in detail.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

The two people who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 concern:

- Male, aged 81, with underlying diseases, who was being treated in the Intensive Care Unit of nicosia General Hospital.

- Woman, aged 83, with underlying diseases, who was hospitalized at Famagusta General Hospital after being transferred from the Golden Age nursing home.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 72, of which:

- 47 men (65%), and

- 25 women (35%).

The average age of the deceased from the disease is 77 years.

B. Hospitalized:

A total of 106 patients with COVID-19 disease are hospitalized in OKYY hospitals, 20 of whom are in serious condition.

Of the 20 patients critical, 10 are intubated, three are hospitalized in the Off-Respirator Intensive Care Unit and seven in the Increased Care Unit.

In detail the situation in the hospitals is as follows:

C. Molecular Examination [PCR test]

Of the 3,736 laboratory diagnoses currently carried out using the Molecular Method (PCR), 403 cases of COVID-19 disease were identified and verified, resulting as follows:

  • 98 cases from 819 samples taken through the process of tracing contacts of already confirmed cases.
  • 124 cases from 1,549 samples taken through a private initiative.
  • 22 cases from 265 samples taken from the Microbiological Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
  • 4 cases from 306 samples taken as part of the control programme for pupils, teachers and school staff.
  • 3 cases from 29 samples taken under the migrant structure control programme.
  • 152 cases from 165 samples taken for verification using the molecular test method of positive results detected through the rapid antigen test method in the previous days.

In addition, the following laboratory tests were carried out, without the detection of a case:

  • From samples taken in the context of passenger and repatriated checks, 476 laboratory tests were completed, and
  • From samples taken as part of the programme of referrals from Personal Physicians and control of special teams through the Public Health Clinics, 127 laboratory diagnoses were carried out.

D. Antigen rapid test: Of the 10,831 tests carried out using the rapid test, 236 positive results were obtained.

These 236 cases will be examined using the PCR molecular method in order to be verified.

In detail, the rapid antigen detection tests were carried out today as follows:

Above - Limassol, Larnaka, Nicosia, Paphos, Ammochostos, National Guard, Civil Servants, Private Initiative
