 Filenews 21 December 2020

The Ministry of Health announces that today, 21 December 2020:

- One person has died of COVID-19 disease, bringing the total number of deaths to 96.

- 127 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, 31 of whom are in serious condition.

- A total of 12,772 disease detection tests have been carried out, of which 3,929 have been carried out with the molecular method (PCR) and 8,843 with the rapid test method.

- 286 new cases of the disease were identified and confirmed by molecular tests (PCRs), bringing the total number of cases to 18,004. The 286 include 156 verifications from rapid tests in the previous days.

- In 312 cases from the rapid antigen detection tests there was a positive result, which should be verified by the molecular method (PCR).

Here are today's results in detail.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

One person who has died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 concerns:

- Male, aged 89, with underlying diseases, who was being treated at Famagusta General Hospital.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 96, of which:

- 62 men (65%), and

- 34 women (35%).

The average age of the deceased from the disease is 79 years.

Hospitalized:

A total of 127 patients with COVID-19 disease are hospitalized in OKYY hospitals, 31 of whom are in serious condition.

Of the 31 patients critical, 15 are intubated and 16 are in the Increased Care Unit.

In detail the situation in the hospitals is as follows:

Molecular Examination (PCR test): Of the 3,929 laboratory diagnoses currently carried out using the Molecular Method (PCR), 286 cases of COVID-19 disease were identified and verified, resulting as follows:

  • 65 cases from 540 samples taken through the process of tracing contacts of already confirmed cases.
  • 8 cases of 2,040 samples taken in the context of passenger and repatriated checks.
  • 40 cases from 806 samples taken through a private initiative.
  • 17 cases from 262 samples taken from the Microbiological Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
  • 156 cases from 165 samples taken for verification using the molecular test method of positive results detected through the rapid antigen test method in the previous days.

In addition, the following laboratory tests were carried out, without the detection of a case:

  • 116 samples taken as part of the referral program by Personal Physicians and special teams control through the Public Health Clinics.

RAPID TESTS

Of the 8,843 tests carried out using the rapid test, 312 positive results were obtained.

These 312 cases will be examined using the PCR molecular method in order to be verified.

In detail, the rapid antigen detection tests were carried out today as follows:

Above - Limassol, Larnaka, Nicosia, Paphos, Ammochostos, Civil Servants, Nursing Homes [2], Private Initiative
