STATISTICS ON BIRTHS, DEATHS, MARRIAGES AND DIVORCES

The population in the free areas of Cyprus increased by 1.4% annually at the end of 2019 and is estimated at 888,000, compared to 875,900 at the end of 2018, an increase of 1.4%.

However, according to demographic statistics for 2019 released today by the Statistical Office, the overall fertility rate last year was estimated at 1.3, at the same levels as in 2018 and below 2.10, a figure necessary to ensure that the population is replenished. At the same time, indications of an ageing population are recorded.

Population

According to the Statistical Office, the population in the areas controlled by the State is estimated at 888,000 at the end of 2019, compared with 875,900 at the end of 2018, an increase of 1.4%.

However, indicative of the ageing population is that the proportion of children under the age of 15 was estimated at 16.0% in 2019 and the proportion of older people aged 65 and over 16.3%, compared to 22.3% and 11.3% respectively in 2000. "In other words, there has been a gradual increase in the proportion of older people and a decrease in the proportion of children, indicative of the trend towards an ageing population," he says.

Birth defects

In 2019, the number of births in the areas controlled by the state increased to 9,548 from 9,329 the previous year and the gross birth rate was estimated at 10.8 for every 1,000 inhabitants. In 2019 the overall fertility rate was estimated at 1.33 and remained at the same level as the previous year. The overall fertility rate has gradually decreased in recent years, from 2.50 which was the highest in 1982.

Since 1995 the overall fertility rate has been lower than 2.10 - a rate necessary to ensure that the population is replenished, the Statistical Office says.

Moreover, the average age of the mother at the birth of her first child was 29.6 years, while the average age for all births in 2019 regardless of the order of birth of the children was 31.2 years.

At 7.1 the gross mortality rate

According to the Statistical Office, the number of deaths in state-controlled areas was 6,239 in 2019 compared to 5,768 in 2018. The gross mortality rate in 2019 increased to 7.1 deaths for every 1,000 residents, up from 6.6 in 2018.

The life expectancy at birth for 2019 was estimated at 80.1 years for men and 84.2 years for women, compared to 80.7 years for men and 84.6 years for women for 2018.

At the same time, infant mortality has reached very low levels and is estimated at 2.6 infant deaths in every 1,000 births in 2019.

At 26,170 migration in 2019

Based on the data, net migration to Cyprus was positive from 1983 to 2011. Negative net migration was observed in 2012-2015, while since 2016 net migration has been positive again. In 2019 it was estimated at 8,797.

The number of migrants to Cyprus (Cypriot returnees and foreigners coming for settlement or temporary employment beyond 1 year) was 26,170 in 2019 from 23,442 in 2018.

According to the Statistical Office, the number of migrants from Cyprus (Cypriots and foreigners who have stayed in Cyprus for at least a year) is estimated at 17,373 for 2019 compared to 15,340 in 2018.

Weddings and Divorces

The total number of marriages in 2019 increased to 14,854 from 13,783 the previous year. Church marriages increased from 3,918 in 2018 to 4,173 in 2019 and civil marriages increased from 9,865 in 2018 to 10,681 in 2019. As in previous years, a significant number of civil marriages were performed by non-residents of Cyprus. In particular, of the total of 10,681 civil marriages performed, only 3,673 were marriages between residents of Cyprus. Thus the total number of marriages of the inhabitants of Cyprus amounted to 7,846.

Reportedly, in 2019 the number of divorces increased to 2,308, from 2,114 issued in 2018. The gross spread rate was estimated at 2.62 for every 1,000 residents in 2019, compared with 2.43 in 2018.

The overall divorce rate, showing the proportion of marriages expected to end in divorce, reached 361.7 in every 1,000 marriages in 2019, up from 41.6 in 1980.
