INITIATIVE LAUNCHED TO RAISE AWARENESS OF 'INVISIBLE WASTE'

Cyprus Mail 20 November 2020 - by Annette Chrysostomou

The environment department announced on Friday Waste Prevention Week will be held between November 21 and 29 with the theme ‘invisible waste.’

According to the announcement, Waste Prevention Week is an initiative aimed at promoting public awareness on sustainable use of resources and waste management at the European level.

In this context, the department will undertake an information campaign which includes a two-minute video clip and another, shorter one, to be shown on TV and social media. An audio version has been prepared for radio stations, and a poster will also be disseminated.

The video shows that while items we buy may be small, such as mobiles, it needs an incredible amount of resources, ‘invisible waste’, to produce them.

An online conference will be held on November 26, during which participants of Life programmes in Greece and Cyprus will present their experiences and best practices regarding waste reduction.

As an additional support to the campaign, the department invited cookery schools, cookery shows on TV, restaurants and hotels to introduce new measures to reduce the amount of discarded food, and to create new dishes either from leftovers or from food which would otherwise be thrown away.

Establishments such as cafes which offer beverages in disposable plastic utensils have been asked to find ways to reduce the consumption of such items, for example by encouraging customers to bring their own glasses and cups or by providing reusable utensils for those who consume drinks on the premises.

All actions are recorded and made public on the electronic platform www.ewwr.eu which has been created for this purpose and functions as a means of recording, managing and promoting actions.
