Cyprus may be the only European country without public toilets on motorways but is one of the many EU countries where just very few people live without indoor flushing toilets in their homes, new Eurostat figures show.
The share of dwellings with no flushing toilet was below 1 per cent in 19 EU member states, and Cyprus is one of them, with just 0.5 per cent of the population without a toilet in their household.
The lowest share was in Sweden, close to 0 per cent, followed by Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands and Slovenia (all 0.1 per cent) as well as Germany (0.2 per cent).
In 2019, an estimated 2.0 per cent of people in EU lived in a dwelling without its own indoor flushing toilet. This represents a decrease of 1.7 percentage points compared with 2010 when it was 3.7 per cent.
Almost one in four people in Romania, 24.2 per cent, reported that their household did not have an indoor flushing toilet for the sole use of the household. This was by far the highest share amongst the EU countries. Romania was followed by Bulgaria with 13.7 per cent and Lithuania with 10 per cent.
The figures were published on the occasion of World Toilet Day marked annually on November 19.
