The presence of the President
of Turkey at the celebrations of the 37th anniversary of the
declaration of the illegal regime in Turkish occupied Cyprus and his visit to
the fenced city of Ammochostos constitute a provocation without precedent and
are totally antithetical to UN Security Council resolutions 550 and 789. They simultaneously undermine
the efforts of the UN Secretary-General to call an informal five-party
meeting and they do not contribute to the creation of a favourable, positive
climate for the resumption of the talks for the solution of the Cyprus problem. At the same time, these acts
cause the outrage of all the people of Cyprus, and more particularly the
people of Ammochostos. The President of the Republic
has denounced these acts by Turkey and the illegal occupation regime through
the letters he sent to the UN Secretary-General, the heads of European
institutions and to heads of state and government of EU member states,
whereas these provocations will be discussed at the upcoming EU Council in
December where the EU is expected to take decisions with regard to the future
of the EU-Turkey relations. (RM/EK) |
