POLICE STEPPING UP TRAFFIC PATROLS OVER HOLIDAY WEEK

Police announced on Thursday a set of measures to combat increased crime and road safety violations during the holiday period – including restricting motorbike use in some cases.

To help prevent a usual spike in road accidents and crime during the holiday week, officers will be out in greater numbers.

In a first, however, the use of motorbikes will be restricted on some roads during certain hours to combat noise pollution. [see item at the end]

It was not immediately clear however where or when these bans are in place and the police spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.

Patrols will be stepped up along typically busy and key areas to monitor potentially dangerous drivers.

As per the announcement, officers will be paying particular attention to drink drivers, those not wearing a seatbelt or crash helmets and speeding.

Police will also be out in force to prevent burglaries in both the cities and the countryside, the announcement read.

The stepped-up police presence will be in effect from August 14 to August 19.

Subsequently the Police have issued the following:

Measures to reduce the phenomenon of nuisance caused during night hours in cities are being taken by the Police. In addition to daily patrols and continuous police checks, by decree of the Deputy Chief of Police, which comes into force today, attempts are made to regulate this phenomenon, on specific dates and specific roads.

 

The decree prohibits the movement of all two-, three- and four-wheel motorcycles, with a range of more than 125c. on roads, days and hours, listed below:

 

Nicosia: On the 16th, 23 and 30 August, 2020, between 00:01 – 05:00, on Griva Digenis Avenue, from the point of intersection with Archangelos Avenue and Agios Prokopios Avenue, to the intersection with Themistocles Dervi Street and Prodromos Avenue, from its junction with Red Cross Street, to the junction with Griva Digenis Avenue.

 

Limassol: On 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, 23, 28, 29 and 30 August, 2020,between the hours of 19:00 – 04:00 the following day, on the Limassol coastal road and specifically on Spyros Araouzos Streets, 28 October, Freedom Bastions, Georgiou I and Amathontos.

 

Paphos :On 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, 23, 28, 29 and 30 August, 2020,between the hours of 20:00 – 04:00 the following day, on Poseidon Avenue, Paphos.

 

Famagusta Free Area : On 14 15, 16, 21, 22, 23, 28, 29 and 30 August, 2020,between the hours of 20:00 – 04:00 the following day, on Protaras Street (Protaras Hotel Road, Municipality of Paralimni) and on the avenues of Nisi and Archbishop Makarios III,in Ayia Napa.

 

It should be noted that the prohibition provisions of the Decree exclude professional food distributors.
