CORONAVIRUS - 46% INCREASE IN INCIDENTS IN LIMASSOL

Crown cases are on the rise in some provinces according to the data reported in the National Report on Coronavirus until 11 August, with Limassol recording an increase of 46% and Larnaca at 28.6%.

At the same time, data concerning the age of patients with coronavirus are interesting according to the data of the National Report since the age of the patients is 23-46 years.

The median age of COVID-19 cases is 41 years, 51.7% is for men and 48.3% for women.

By age groups: 94 infants, children and adolescents 0-17 years (7.4%), 927 adults aged 18-59 (72.5%) and 257 people aged 60 and over (20.1%).

A total of 878 or 70.2% of those diagnosed with the disease have recovered, these are people without symptoms who have had a negative result in two tests after the first positive or for whom 21 days have passed since diagnosis.

According to the data, the median time from the onset of symptoms to the date of sampling is 4 days.

Drop in the reproduction rate of the crown

According to national reporting data on coronavirus, the rate of reproduction of the virus has decreased based on previous epidemiological data.

Based on the four methods of recording R0 the data is as follows:

  • Method 1: From 1.2 it fell to 0.97
  • Method 2: From 1.12 down to 0.65
  • Method 3: From 1.3 came down to 1.2
  • Method 4: From 0.95 it stood at 0.96

Mortality

At 2.1% is mortality in diagnosed cases of COVID-19, while by 11 August, 70.2% or 878) people with COVID-19 have recovered, according to the National Report on the disease released by the Ministry of Health.

In relation to deaths, it is reported that by 11 August, 27 deaths were reported in Cyprus in cases with COVID-19 (Mortality: 2.1%).

Covid-19 mortality per 100,000 population is 3.1. Twenty deaths (74%) occurred in men and seven (26%) to women.

The median age of people with COVID-19 who died is 76 years.

Ten deaths were reported in the province of Larnaca and eight in the province of Paphos, four in the province of Nicosia, three in the province of free Famagusta and two in the province of Limassol

Laboratory diagnoses

Also by 11 August 2020, a total of 238,000 diagnostic tests (27,172.1 per 100,000 population) had been carried out.

In particular, by 11 August 2020, 1,278 cases of COVID-19 and 27 deaths (mortality in diagnosed cases of COVID-19: 2.1%) had been reported in the Republic of Cyprus.

Among these cases, 15.6% or 200 are health workers of which 3.2% or 41 are doctors, 7.8% or 100 nurses, 0.8% or 10 other health professionals and 3.8% or 49 auxiliary staff.

Domestic transmission cases are 855.

Compared to domestic transmission cases for 76.4% of the 1,119 cases where the epidemiological history is known, these are 855. Of these, 111 (13%) recorded in the Municipality of Aradippou and 57 (6.7%) were related to Paphos General Hospital, it is reported.

With travel history

As of 1 July, of the 289 recorded confirmed cases, 31% or 88 were in cases with a recent travel history, while 63% or 177 were in cases of domestic transmission.

Hospitalized

A total of 15.3% or 196 cases of COVID-19 received hospital care. In particular, six cases or 3.1% were still in hospital on 10 August either for COVID-19 treatment or for underlying diseases.

The median age of all hospitalized patients is 61.5 years, with 63.3% for men.

In total, 32 patients (16.3% of all nurses) were admitted to Intensive Care Units (ICU4). On August 11th, no patients were in an ICU.

Of the 32 patients admitted to the ICU, 27 (84.4%) intubated. The median length of stay in the ICU (for all 32 patients hospitalized or even hospitalized in the ICU) is 11 days. For patients who died in ICU (18) the median length of stay was 13.5 days, for those transferred or discharged from ICU (14), the median length of stay in ICU was 10.5 days.

In relation to clinical characteristics, it is reported that of the 1,278 laboratory confirmed cases of COVID-19, clinical information is available for 98.6% or 1,260, of which 38.2% or 481 did not report any symptoms at diagnosis and 61.8% or 779 reported at least one symptom.

Symptoms and underlying diseases

The most commonly reported symptoms are fever (355/1,243, 28.6%), cough (358/1.243, 28.8%), myalgia (240/1.240, 19.4%), sore throat (198/1.238, 16%), iosmia (n=143/1.223, 10.1%) and difficulty breathing (124/1.223, 10.1%). Other reported symptoms are runny nose, diarrhoea and headache, added.

Data on underlying diseases in people with COVID-19 were available for 1,115 (90.3%) Cases. Of these, 405 (35.7%) reported at least one underlying disease.

The most common underlying diseases were hypertension (143/1.143, 12.5%), diabetes (81/1.149, 7.1%), heart disease (70/1.148, 6.1%) and malignancies (29/1.155, 2.5%). Other reported co-morbidities were immunosuppression, chronic renal failure, autoimmune diseases and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

It should be noted that for 27 cases, the date of collection of the sample was prior to the onset of symptoms, as a result of direct examination of individuals who had contact with a confirmed or possible COVID-19 case.

Until 11 August, the cumulative 14-day incidence of COVID-19 (per 100,000 inhabitants), a measure reflecting the rate of active CASES OF COVID-19 in the population (prevalence of active disease)1, is 23.7 per 100,000 inhabitants, it is reported.

As of August 11, 70.2% (878) of COVID-19 cases have recovered. The 801 (91.2%) had a negative result in two tests after the first positive and for 77 (8.8%) 21 days have passed since diagnosis. The median time between the second negative result and the first sampling for the diagnosis of COVID-19 is 24 days

Comparison with other countries

According to the data presented comparatively for other countries up to the same date, in Greece mortality is 3.7%, in Malta, 0.9%, in Sweden at 6.9%, in Italy at 14%, in the USA at 3.2%, in the United Kingdom at 14.9%, in the Netherlands at 10.4% and in the Republic of Korea also at 2.1%.
