SIMPLE PROTECTION MEASURES AGAINST CAR THEFT AND THEFT OF PROPERTY FROM CARS

From Cyprus Police

In addition to the efforts made by the Police, in order to protect the property of citizens more effectively, a series of simple preventive measures are listed below to prevent incidents of vehicle theft and theft of property in vehicles, incidents in which they usually also cause damage to the windows or doors of vehicles in an attempt to breach them in order to steal property left inside vehicles.

1. We never leave money, bags, wallets, mobile phones, laptops and other valuables or important documents exposed and prominently in our vehicle, which can attract the attention of thieves and encourage theft or attempt at theft.

2. We park our vehicle in proper parking spaces, since it is safer. During the night, it is preferable to park our vehicle in places where there is enough road lighting, avoiding dark or secluded spots

3. We make sure that we have removed the keys of the vehicle, lock the doors and fully raise its windows. Even in the event of our removal from our vehicle, we take all those measures that would prevent the theft or theft of property from our vehicle.

We should also check our surroundings if we are carrying money, and should ensure that we never carry large amounts of money without having at least one person with us. Further, if money is carried, say to a bank, on a regular basis, the time and route should be varied.

4. If an anti-theft system is installed in our vehicle, we make sure that it is activated, while regularly checking that it is operating normally

More generally, the public is encouraged to be vigilant and to cooperate closely with the Police and in case they become aware of persons or vehicles roaming suspiciously, to immediately inform the local Police Station or to contact the Citizen's Contact Line on the telephone number 1460.

Finally, always prioritizing our physical integrity, safety and health, we avoid any confrontation with any suspicious person who may also react aggressively against us. The discreet observation of the suspects and the immediate information of the Police is the safest handling of such incidents by the citizens.
