House President Demetris Syllouris on Friday announced the composition of an ad hoc committee that will investigate a controversial list of politically exposed persons (PEPs) with bad debts, which is turning into an embarrassment for MPs.
Syllouris informed the House plenum that the selection committee had decided to set up the ad hoc committee and the terms of reference would be decided on Wednesday during a meeting of the party leaders.
The committee will be chaired by Syllouris and it will have eight members from all parliamentary parties except one.
Independent Anna Theologou said she did not want to take part.
The committee is made up by Disy’s Marios Mavrides, Stephanos Stephanou from Akel, Diko’s Panicos Leonidou, Edek’s Elias Myrianthous, Giorgos Lillikas of the Citizens’ Alliance, Solidarity’s Michalis Giorgallas, Green party’s Giorgos Perdikis, and Elam’s Linos Papayiannis.
Akel raised eyebrows after it chose to leave out MP Irini Charalambides who was very vocal on the issue and fought against it being shelved.
The PEP document – marked ‘confidential’ – was first delivered to Syllouris by former CBC boss Chrystalla Giorghadji in April of 2019 just before she stepped down.
The issue has been going back and forth since prompting suggestions that parties had something to hide.
