A yellow weather warning was in place on Sunday for very high temperatures valid until 5pm on Sunday.
The maximum temperature was expected to be around 41C in inland areas, around 37C along the west and north coast and around 32C in the mountains.
And no respite from the heat is likely on Monday when temperatures are expected to reach 42C inland.
According to the met office, the temperature on Monday will also hit around 39C in the south and east coast, 38C in the west coast, 36C in the north coast and 32C in the mountains.
The weather on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday is expected to be clear and sunny with no major change in temperatures in the mountains while the temperature in coastal areas is expected to gradually decrease but still remain above average.
