POSTING OF BANK ACCOUNT DETAILS VIA FRAUDULENT PHONE CALLS - WARNING

The police recommend special attention to the public, to protect against fraudulent phone calls to citizens, aimed at posting personal bank accounts of citizens.

According to an information received by the Police from the Central Bank of Cyprus, a number of citizens have received malicious phone calls from suspicious persons, asking citizens to report their personal bank accounts details to them. Otherwise, the perpetrators of the fraud tell citizens that they will freeze the money in their bank accounts.

In some cases it is falsely shown that malicious phone calls are made by the Central Bank of Cyprus, since the telephone screens of the citizens who receive the calls are marked the name "Central Bank". In other cases, the telephone numbers of the perpetrators of the fraud appear to be displayed, which appear to be calling from foreign countries, but it is not excluded that there may be incidents of malicious phone calls from telephone numbers in Cyprus or telephone numbers with different data.

The reported fraud was instructed by the Police Leadership to investigate immediately.

Below is the relevant announcement of the Central Bank of Cyprus:

"We inform the public that any telephone calls he receives under the name Central Bank Of Cyprus through which they ask him to provide details of their bank accounts otherwise they will not be able to carry out transactions, they do not represent the Central Bank of Cyprus and relate to false representations.

We call on the public, for prevention purposes, to contact the Central Bank of Cyprus to verify the authenticity of any relevant information in order to ensure the security of their personal data and, by extension, their bank accounts.

The Central Bank of Cyprus has informed the Cyprus Police, which is investigating the case.".
