A total of 106 Peyia residents have been asked to submit samples for a coronavirus test, mayor Marinos Lambrou said on Saturday.
They are among 1000 individuals from Paphos and nearby communities selected for targeted testing to give a clearer indication of contagion in the area which has seen a disproportionately high number of cases.
All were selected based on a random representative sample.
Testing started today and is funded by the Health Ministry, local authorities and business groups.
Lambrou said a few Peyia residents had gone to give a sample today, but most will go tomorrow and Monday.
He said that no confirmed Covid-19 case has been detected in Peyia so far, and urged residents invited to give a sample to do so for the public good.
Paphos mayor Phedon Phedonos said that 186 had given samples on Saturday. Some of those contacted to come were in their villages while 18% to 20% did not respond fearing break their self-isolation.
He urged residents not to be frightened and to give a sample. It was a simple procedure that took a few seconds. Everyone will be notified of their result, whether positive or negative, he added.
