THEY DETECT CASES OF CORONAVIRUS VIA MOBILE

Philenews 23 March 2020 -Petros Theocharidis

The pandemic has led several countries to decide to remove the "secret weapons" from their drawers and use them to limit the spread of coronavirus.

Taking advantage of the power provided by technology and mobile phones, they are monitoring the dispersal of their citizens inside and outside the country while Israel has already gone a step further and with the information it has gathered so far, has been able to warn their citizens about the presence of a person diagnosed with coronavirus in close proximity to them.

In Cyprus, the implementation of such a measure for the time being is a "remote scenario" as asserted by government officials, which is also confirmed by information provided by "F" from mobile networks, that there have been no such requests so far. data processing. It is noted that legislation has not been promoted in Cyprus to allow such activity, but in other countries similar legislation is being accelerated.

However, by utilizing the information gathered in this way, different countries know where their citizens are on the planet.

This data monitoring and mapping is done mainly in two ways by specialized companies.

The first way is by mapping the location of mobile phones in the country and around the world by tracking the location of mobile phones in relation to their connection to one or the other cellular antennas of telephony networks.

The second and most widely used way, which gives a more detailed picture of the location of each cellphone, is through companies that process the geographic location data of each cellphone, compiled with the consent of the cellphone owners, given when installing an application and their consent is sought for access to various data, such as the geographical location based on the indication of the GPS location of the mobile.

In Israel, they took this technology a step further by activating a service whereby, when a confirmed case approached a citizen, that citizen immediately received an SMS alert on his cellphone. The action was halted in Israel by a Supreme Court ruling.
