The Department of Environment has given the green light for a new Jumbo store in Nicosia to be situated where the former headquarters of the Stephanides Group were.
The land and buildings which housed the Group were in the hands of Banks of Cyprus and REMU – the special unit managing foreclosed property which reached agreement with Jumbo Trading Ltd, the Greek Group’s subsidiary in Cyprus. The Bank had the building priced at €18.3 million.
The property consists of a basement, ground floor and a first floor. And within a walking distance are The Mall of Cyprus, IKEA, Nicosia General Hospital and various car dealerships.
A study tabled before the Assessment of the Impacts on the Environment from Projects department shows that Jumbo will have a total of 331 parking spaces of which 33 will be designated to people with disabilities.
The covered roof parking area will also accommodate photovoltaic panels. The super store will have a total useable floor area of 10,476 sq. metres.
The study also shows that no construction will take in block 1951, part of which will be parking lots and the rest will be green area.
In addition, at the northern end of the proposed development there was a gas station for the needs of a car dealership. The fuel storage tanks will be removed with the duration of works expected to last about 12 months.
There will be three access points – one for the entry of catering vehicles, another for the entry and exit of Jumbo customers and a third for the exit of catering vehicles. The main entrance will be to the east of the development, on the road leading to Athalassa Forest.
The Department of Environment has given the green light after taking into account all information submitted, it said.
