Consumers will need to dig a little deeper into their pockets to buy meat for their Christmas table, particularly pork and lamb.
According to the price observatory of the Consumer Protection Service following a survey carried out on December 17-18, the price of meat is up compared to last year.
But prices for Christmas sweets at bakeries are steady and lower than last year at the big supermarkets. It added.
As regards meat, the survey covered 96 points of sale including large and small supermarkets and neighbourhood butchers.
The average price for local lamb is up to €7.95 a kilo from €6.52 a kilo at the large supermarkets, €8.57 from €7.53 a kilo at the small supermarkets and €9.31 from €8.55 a kilo at neighbourhood butchers.
Pork is selling at €4.72 a kilo from €4.50 a kilo last year at the large supermarkets, €5.01 from €4.51 a kilo at small supermarkets and €5.32 from €5.18 neighbourhood butchers.
Prices for local lamb ranges from €6.50 to €11.25 a kilo and for imported lamb from €6.95 to €8.90. Pork prices range from €2.30 to €7.99 a kilo and local beef from €4.95 to €13.00 a kilo.
Chicken is selling for less this year, particularly at the large supermarkets where it will cost you €2.77 a kilo compared to €2.83 last year. It is €3.14 (€3.19 last year) at the small supermarkets and €4.23 (€4.15 last year) at the neighbourhood butchers.
Prices range from €2.00 to €10.30 a kilo.
The price of turkey is marginally up at big supermarkets (€4.73 from €4.35 a kilo) and neighbourhood butchers (€5.44 from €5.38 ) but down at small supermarkets ( €4.72 from €4.86 ) Prices range from €2.99 to €6.50 a kilo.
The survey for Christmas sweets covered 54 points of sale in all districts including large supermarkets and bakeries. Prices for melomakarona range from €4 a kilo (two packs of 500g) to €16 a kilo. Kourabiedes cost from €4.40 to €18 a kilo and Christmas Cakes from €5.12 to €22 a kilo.
Compared to 2018, the average price for melomakarona fell to €8.13 from €8.76 a kilo at the large supermarkets and remained steady at €10.75 at the bakeries. The average price for almond kourapiedes fell to €7.99 from €8.70 a kilo at the large supermarkets and rose to €10.89 from €10.77 a kilo at the bakeries.
