REDUCTION IN SPECIFIC FORMS OF CRIME IN CYPRUS RECORDED BY EUROSTAT

02/11/2019 09:24:00 AM

Quite encouraging, as regards security and crime in Cyprus in relation to the other EU Member States, are the figures
released by the Union Statistical Service (Eurostat).

According to data published by the Office on criminal activity in Europe in 2017, Cyprus is among the countries with the
lowest number of robberies per 100,000 inhabitants. In particular, Cyprus ranks fourth in the list of EU countries, with
the lowest number of robberies complaints, with 14 robberies per 100,000 inhabitants, behind Hungary and Slovakia
(9 robberies) and Slovenia (12 robberies).

At the same time, Cyprus is among the EU countries with the lowest homicide rates per 100,000 inhabitants. Our country,
with seven homicides recorded in 2017, has a rate of close to 0.8 per 100,000 inhabitants, while Luxembourg has the
lowest rate (0.3).

Eurostat figures also extend to the issue of car theft, where Cyprus is roughly in the middle of the list, with a rate of
nearly 110 thefts per 100,000 inhabitants. First in the list with the highest rate of car theft is Luxembourg with 328, while
Denmark is the lowest with 4 car thefts per 100,000 inhabitants.

Eurostat figures in the three categories of crime listed show a steady decline in the proportion of these crimes in both
Europe and Cyprus for the period 2011 - 2017.

Commenting on Eurostat crime data, Police spokesman Mr Christos Andreou said that these data "provide encouraging
evidence of the results of police action in the field of crime prevention and crime prevention". ». He notes, however, that
as Police "we realize there is room for improvement, to further reduce crime, in Cyprus, both in the areas cited by Eurostat
and in other forms of crime."
