SIMPLE TIPS FROM THE POLICE FOR DRIVING ON A WET ROAD

22/10/2019 10:08:00 AM

Driving on wet roads hides many pitfalls, so drivers should always be alert and fully concentrated. For the safety
of the driver, the occupants of the vehicle and all road users it is advisable to follow the following
simple tips:

1. Make sure the wiper blades are not damaged and that there is enough water in the windscreen
washer.

2. Turn on the traffic lights and drive carefully for limited visibility.

3. The closed windows during the rain quickly lead to the glazing of the windows, use the air-conditioning
system to clean the windows.

4.Check your tires before getting on the road. Make sure that the tires have both the intended tread
depth and the correct pressure. Normal tread depth helps avoid slippage and water slippage.

5. Rain increases the slip of the road. Especially at the start of the rain, the roads can become
extremely slippery.

6. Reduce speed, slower driving allows for longer contact with the road, leading to better traction.
Keep greater safety distance from the front car.

7.Preparing for a rain trip requires careful use of all key controls - steering wheel, clutch, brakes
and throttle - as well as greater safety margin for possible errors and emergencies. When you embark
on a rain ride, your shoes will get wet and slip easily off the pedals. Rub the soles on the car mat
before starting the engine. Check that the traffic lights, tail lights, brake lights and flashlights are
working properly.

8. In the rain, overtaking requires a great deal of care, as it is more difficult to calculate the speed
of other cars and a sudden change of lane can lead to loss of control of the car.

9.Do not try to pass through moving water if you cannot have wider environmental control. It is
possible that heavy rain can form torrents, which can become extremely dangerous.

10 . In places where too much water has been gathered, move very slowly and remember that the
more water the car lifts as you pass, the greater the chance that the engine's electrical components
will get wet.

11 . When moving in residential areas, pay attention to pedestrians moving on a sidewalk or
waiting at a bus stop to avoid unwanted conditions (wetting them).

11 + 1. Prior to any traffic you are informed about the situation on the road network, through
the websites and the social media of the Police, as well as the category Road Network, in the
Application of the Cyprus Police.
