A study conducted by Eurostat has revealed that Cyprus is among the worst countries in the European Union (EU) when it comes to recycling.
With a 16.1% rate of municipal waste destined for recycling, the island currently ranks 25th out of the 27 EU member states covered in the study, followed only by Romania and Malta. Ireland was the only country not to be included in the Eurostat findings.
Greece is also trailing far behind the EU average of 46.4%, as only 18.9% of their total waste ends up being recycled.
On the opposite side of the table, Germany leads the way with 67.6%, followed by Slovenia with 57.8% and Austria with 57.7%.
The study is part of a larger EU plan called “Sustainable Development Goal”, which focuses on progress made in enriching the quality of life in cities and communities, in fostering sustainable mobility and in alleviating adverse environmental impacts.
