Three non-Cypriots were remanded in custody for six days on Wednesday as police investigate what they believe is a gang who stole jewellery and then sold it on.
The three — two men aged 36 and 24 and a woman aged 36 — were arrested on Tuesday night in Peyia after a police patrol stopped their car. Police found a receipt from the sale of jewellery as well as burglary tools, a torch, carnival masks, watches, earrings and cash. During a search of their home, police found another 21 sale receipts to the same shop.
Police told the court they were also investigating the company which bought the jewellery. They cited legislation which requires companies to keep the items they buy for a certain period before to ensure the goods are not stolen. Some of the receipts found are only a few days old and police will check whether the buyer still has the items.
