SIMPLE PROTECTION MEASURES AGAINST PROPERTY THEFT IN BUSY PLACES & SHOPPING CENTRES

13/04/2019 11:37:00 - Information from Cyprus Police

Facts about the theft of persons have been observed lately, since property left unattended is easy to be stolen.

For the purpose of preventing such phenomena, and in addition to the efforts made by the Police to prevent thefts
from persons, the public is encouraged to be particularly careful when moving on busy streets or places in the various
shopping centers and to take further measures to protect property more effectively .

For example, a series of precautionary measures that citizens are invited to take is listed below.

1. Avoid transferring large amounts of money. We only transfer the money, which is necessary and we will need for
any of our purchases and expenses.

2. When we walk or are in busy streets or public places and shops, we have money, bank credit cards and mobile
phones in the front pockets of our clothes.

3. When we carry a bag, we do not put all the money and other items of value in the bag unless it is absolutely
necessary, since our bag is a target of theft.

4. We carry our bag in a way so we can have a constant eye contact with it. For example, it can be placed
cross-sectionally on our body, making it difficult for someone to distract it or open it to steal its contents.

5. When we visit shops we always own our personal items, without leaving them exposed anywhere, within the shops.

6. Owners and shop staff should also not leave unattended in the store, personal property such as their wallet,
purse or mobile phone.

7. In places where there is overcrowding, but also in dark and distant places, we are especially careful, since
conditions are appropriate for us to be a target for the theft of our property by laborers.

More generally, the public is encouraged to be alert, to work closely with the Police and to immediately inform the
local Police Station or contact the Citizen's Contact Line at number 1460 in case they identify anything that the suspect,
such as persons or vehicles, they move suspiciously.
