FROM CYPRUS POLICE: 06/04/2019 18:23:00
A characteristic of honest citizens is the confidence they display to other people, even if they do not
know their character and life. As a result, victims of fraud are easy to fall through. Preventing and
avoiding easy deception requires us simply to be cautious about approaches from unknown people
and not to hold a blind eye to anyone unknown.
Particularly during this Easter period, it is likely that unfamiliar faces reach us on various busy places,
on our streets or in our homes, asking for financial assistance, putting forward a number of allegations.
A typical incident is what happened in Limassol this morning, Friday, April 5, when a 51-year-old
woman approached a woman and asked for financial help with false performances. The complainant
immediately informed the police and after the 51-year-old was found, it was found to be a fraud case.
The 51-year-old was arrested and today she was brought before the District Court, which, after being
convicted, imposed a fine on her.
Another form of deception by the public is instances of misleading sales of small items, as financial
aid to street vendors. Furthermore, plumbers often choose to visit residences where vulnerable,
elderly people reside, either for out-of-home objects, or for seeking financial assistance with
similar false pretenses.
Police urge everyone to be very careful and cautious when strangers try to convince them to pay a
sum of money under any pretext.
In such a case, people are encouraged to try to contain the characteristics of the perpetrators, as
well as the elements of the vehicles with which they are moving, such as registration number,
vehicle make, color, etc., which helps to identify suspects .
The public is generally called upon if any suspected traffic that appears to be related to these
or similar occurrences is communicated to the nearest Police Station or to the Citizen's Contact
Line at the Police Station number 1460.
Finally, the public is informed that, according to the Law, any fundraising may be carried out only
after permission of the Competent Authority, ie the Ministry of the Interior or the District
Administration, while the Competent Authority issues a relevant Authorization Certificate to the
persons who carry out a fundraiser . A relevant update is published on the website of the Ministry
of the Interior, at
where an updated list of fundraisers is published, legally conducted with the authorization of the
Competent Authority.
